Le chef de l’État tchadien, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, avait martelé un message ferme quelques heures avant l’assaut : « Nous intensifierons notre combat avec une volonté inébranlable pour anéantir cette menace définitivement ». Ces mots, publiés sur ses réseaux sociaux, faisaient suite à l’incursion violente menée par une faction affiliée à l’organisation terroriste Boko Haram contre la base militaire de Barka Tolorom, située en bordure du lac Tchad côté tchadien. L’attaque, survenue la veille, a coûté la vie à 24 soldats, soulignant la persistance d’une insécurité tenace dans la région.
